The project started in August 2004, then being called Gate06. The title changed to Der 6te Sinn [The 6th Sense]. The model project developed is a communicative one, communally developed project that negotiates art and society as well as culture and living space using application-oriented, transdisciplinary and, above all, participatory processes. In times of general tendencies towards centralization in the cultural sector, the project Der 6te Sinn, [… organized by IG Kultur Wien in 1060 Vienna] is a project unique in Vienna [at that time]. It want[ed] to break new ground in terms of content, direct communication and cooperative working methods.

At the initiative of IG Kultur Wien, theoretical foundations were developed that can be used to support and analyze citizen participation processes and participation processes in the field of art and culture. This theoretical examination of contemporary participation work at the interface of art and culture was implemented in the course of the pilot project DER 6TE SINN lasting several months using the example of public voting for selected projects from and in Vienna-Mariahilf.

Der 6te Sinn develop[ed] from moderated, transdisciplinary working groups, which were composed of initiatives of different artistic and cultural orientations as well as interest groups and citizens’ initiatives […]. The IG Kultur Wien act[ed] as an advisory and supportive communication platform. The fundamentally interdisciplinary project, which therefore goes beyond art and culture [… turned] to the entire environment of active “users” from the segments of residents and socio-politically and culturally interested people.

Der 6te Sinn [… opened] an experimental field with high demands […]: cultural initiatives, artists, social initiatives and traders in the district 1060 Vienna should be put into a process of debate. The old slogan of “culture for all” should be replaced by a practice of “culture for all” not even asking for the lowest common denominator. Joint projects should be developed along fault lines and differences. Cross-divisional networking and participation on as many levels as possible were the top priorities, which were also held up with great commitment by those involved.

The fest of partnership raffling

The 6.LOS was celebrated on 02/03/2005 in Hotkultur, 1060 Vienna, with a musical program.

Right from the start, no one [… had been] asked to submit a finished project or concept, but to indulge in a raffle: namely an approval from a partner emerging by chance.

Public Voting

In the course of this partnership, a common concept was created. The concepts were presented and submitted to a public voting, which should then decide on the funding. A playful exchange between the so thrown together parties was aimed at […].

Festival

From 16 to 25 September 2005, the results of the networking process and the project partnerships were eventfully presented in 1060 Vienna, accompanied by a bilateral symposium in cooperation with the partner district in Budapest.
