in the framework of the Digital Media Festival 2002/03
In 2003, Fatima Lasay invited kanonmedia to show works of her students in form of an online exhibition, thus contributing to the international presence of media art produced at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. kanonmedia felt happy to accept the invitation, and the project became an international success in the net.art world of the time.
The Hidden War: Re-imagining the Center is a larger scale version of the preceding project Hidden War which exhibited artistic “banner ads” in the framework of Brandon Barr’s Banner Art Collective online project founded in the USA.
The mission of The Hidden War: Re-imagining the Center is a cultural criticism of the serious human rights violations, tortures, and murder in Sulu. The exhibited works out of the fields painting, mixed media work, installation, performance, sound and video refer to the context of militarization in Sulu, and in a broader effort reflect and differentiate mediatization and actualization of violence. Issues surrounding the nature and realities of motivations for conflict and violence are explored: national and cultural identities, sexualities and gender construction, catholicism, US political, economic and military intervention, ethnic and class hierarchies, globalization …
