Das Format Art Following the Trend? Artists‘ Voices. wurde von Alexandra Reill während ihres Aufenthalts an der Gümüşlük Akademie im Rahmen des Artists-in-Residency-Programms des Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum in der Türkei entwickelt. Dort wurden erste Videointerviews geführt, gefolgt von Gesprächen mit KünstlerInnen aus dem internationalen Raum, die Alexandra Reill zu ihren Motivationen des Kunstschaffens, die Ziele ihrer Kunstproduktion und ihre Selbstdefinition ihrer Rollen und Positionen in zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften befragte, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf Finanzierungsmodellen für die eigene Kunstproduktion sowie persönliche Lebensweisen in diesem Kontext lag.
Die Interviewreihe entwickelte sich zu einem Projekt der Künstlerischen Forschung und führte zu zwei in den Jahren 2006-2008 parallel implementierten Modulen – einer Reihe von Diskussionsrunden und KünstlerInnengesprächen, teilweise kombiniert mit Screenings früherer Videointerviews, die in Wien stattfanden.

Darüber hinaus entwickelte sich aus dem Künstlerischen Forschungsprojekt die Publikation Art Following the Trend? Artists‘ Voices. Artists‘ Talks – eine Interpositionierung von Exzerpten künstlerischer Positionen beteiligter KünstlerInnen; und zu der Studie Art Following the Trend? Artists‘ Voices., die die Interviews und eine Umfrage zum Thema auf der Grundlage quantitativer und qualitativer Analysemethoden auswertet.
