THARA is an initiative of the associations kanonmedia, Romano Drom, Verein Alte Fleischerei - backbone, Volkshilfe Österreich Equal Gemeinn. Gmbh and the WAFF Program Management Gmbh. The concept for the foundation of Thara was developed by kanonmedia and led to the foundation of the first job orientation centre on the basis of a creative media lab for Roma and Sinti teens and co-run by a NGO active in the indigenious cultural work.

Thara was funded within the framework of the nEwC_baselines project of the European Union Iniative EQUAL by means of the European Social Fund and means of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economics and Employment. Strategic partners are the Arbeiterkammer Wien, the Fonds Soziales Wien, the Landesjugendreferat der Stadt Wien, the Wiener ArbeitnehmerInnen Förderungsfonds and the Wirtschaftskammer Wien.

THARA has been awarded as 2nd winner of the Innovation Price of the City of Vienna 2006.

kanonmedia as a NGO with expertise in new technologies in the context of experimental as much as sociocultural applications developed the idea to fund a support center for Roma and Sinti teens co-run by representatives of the indigenious culture. The kernel of the idea was the combination of creative production in the framework of a hi-tec media lab and traditional indigenious approaches to the arts to enhance a preparedness to education and job orientation amongst teens. The project was implemented as an interdisciplinary competence network of romanodrom, a Roma and Sinti-NGO working in the context of Roma culture and intercultural exchange, the youth center Back Bone 20, Volkshilfe Österreich, one of the leading Austrian organisations in the tradition of the workers welfare movements providing a broad range of social services, and Polycollege specialized on training and education.

With Thara, Roma and Sinti in Vienna can rely upon a culture-immanent contact point focussing on culture-specific problems in diverse social segments. Individual learning and learning in groups enhances the chance to finish school. Computer workshops and team work projects generate joyful experiences and helpaiming at the compensation of educational deficits and an increase of the general level of education, depending on individual needs. Continuous coaching and activation of the teens increases the willingness and capacities to develop job visions and realistic job expectations and to undertake active steps to achieve the goal developed. The creative use of culture-immanent methods in combination with the use of ICT increases self-esteem, strengthens identity, self-activation and job orientation. Continuous counselling for teens and family members, active job placing and coaching of the teens under intensive networking and cooperation with public authorities and organizations being active in the field of labour market policy helps the Roma and Sinti cultures to survive and at the same time to integrate in a global society. Through international lobbying for the needs of an ethnical group which belongs to the poorest and most diffamed ethnicities of Europe THARA enhances know-how transfer between partners of expertise and the dissemination of information on a national and transnational basis.
